Thanks to all who have participated in past Fall 2008 Map Reading, Compass use and beginners O training events and made them a success. This event was started in 2000 and has been patterned after the end-of-October - New Jersey Scout "Orienteering" Champs. You will find more information about this May 9, 2009 event at www.scoutorienteering.com. This event offers age appropriate courses for Cub, Girl and Boy Scouts and provides free Map Reading training. Scout unit pre-registration is required.
There is no tent camping at Rutgers Preserve. Rutgers map is revised April 2009 map edition, but only major roads (West side NJ18) and trails have been updated. At the Spring event, regular DVOA fees are in effect, and it is a walk-on event (no registration in advance).
The Garden State Scout O Fall #15 event is scheduled for Sunday, October 18, 2009. Location will be at Quail Hill BSA Camp, Manalapan, NJ. This is an advance registration and "Invitational" event, see info/forms posted in August at www.scoutorienteering.com. Beginner 'map reading' training is available by DVOA members. Units interested in On-Site Quail Hill BSA tent camping are asked to Call the Monmouth Council BSA office at (732) 536-2347, for campsite reservations while they last. This event is limited to the first 200 Scouts to register, please contact the event director early to avoid disappointment! We are parking lot and map supply limited (first 200 Scouts get patches and maps, then they may run out), and limit the # of Scout entrants to avoid over crowding the hiking courses and parking area. Remember, separate unit registrations are needed for Wash Crossing and Quail Hill, Registration for the ... Washington Crossing Scout champs ... does not guarentee you entry into Quail Hill Scout O unless registration forms are sent in separately, and we will likey 'run out' of QH starts/slots in Early Oct.
The #14 and #15 DVOA event director will again be Bob Rycharski <rrychars@csc.com>. Please direct inquiries to him. The Quail Hill map is a revised 1:5000 scale, 3 meter contour and color OCAD map, 2002 base map, field re-checked by DVOA in late 2008.
