There's a common misconception here that I want to point out. First of
all, it's a fine idea to fieldcheck from an aerial photo and USGS contours
if you're strapped for cash. If you can possibly afford a real basemap,
it will easily pay for itself in frustration savings, but if you can't,
then USGS contours are one step up from mapping on blank paper, and the
aerial photo can be helpful as well.

BUT... I've heard people all too often talk about getting the basemap into
0CAD. There's no point to this! I've heard some people argue that in
certain terrain, a very good base is so close to the final map that all
you have to do when fieldchecking is to make minor adjustments. Maybe.
I've worked with a couple of very good basemaps and not found this to be
anywhere near the case. Maybe it is true somewhere, and if you can get
the basemap delivered in digital format to save you the labor of
digitizing, it would be a worthwhile idea. But if you're using USGS
contours, I'll guarantee that manually digitizing the base is a big waste
of time. You should wait until you have the field-corrected stuff before
you go to the work of putting anything in the computer.

Here's what I'd suggest: get an aerial photo, and have it printed at the
scale that you want for fieldchecking (probably twice as big as the map
scale). A simple photocopier may suffice for this process. Next, blow up
the USGS map on a photocopier (maybe in several steps) to the same size as
the big photo. Get the final copy on clear stock (ideally you'd want
clear mylar for dimensional stability if the humidity changes, but since
the USGS contours are so crummy anyway, it's probably not that important).
Put the contour transparency on top of the photo, and top it all with a
sheet of mylar drafting film on which you will draw your fieldnotes. When
you tape everything down on a board to take it outdoors, leave one edge
open so that you can slip a piece of white paper between the sheets; this
is helpful if you want to look at only the stuff you have drawn, or if you
want to see the contours but not the photo. Fieldcheck!

When you're done fieldchecking, then you can fire up 0CAD and digitize
what you've drawn on the top sheet. (You can essentially throw away the
photo and USGS transparency at this point, because you should have drawn
the whole map on the top layer while you were outdoors.)

Good luck!
J-J

Uh, I see them. I live in a city where lots of people have a "If
everyone is going to trash it, then why should I care" mentality. Its a
real lousy lifestyle.

Not it the case of WOC 93, eh? Being a regular in Hariman, I will be
please to go around and show you abandoned WOC junk. example: A stash of
water containers on the Baileytown map that one of the teams abandoned
after training.

I have a great idea! Whenever ANYONE sets ANY course, they should
leave the vetting streamers in the woods after the course is over.
You never know when someone might want to re-run a really exciting
leg. Then, every once in a while , they should revisit the course and
if any streamers are gone, they should hang up some nice fresh ones
for everyone to enjoy. That way, we would have a nice permanent record
of all the great O courses that were ever created!

I'm sorry to rave but living is dirty city full of non-caring, dirty
pepole, seeing my peers trash nature just pisses me off.
Places that leave a positive memory are the ones that give the
impression that someone cares.
Rotting WOC control stands remind me of rotting food in a filthy city
alley that no one cares about...

Ed, Thanks for the comments. I agree with your philosophy that "B maps are
real maps" and that "good maps will bring in more members". We had a meet
in Sept. with 720 + runners (most Junior ROTC). My homemade map copied
with OCAD looks real good but I know there are a lot of errors and
mistakes. A good Orienteer knows this also. We will continue to work on
upgrading our maps. I am convinced that a good base is the only way to go.
We will have enough money (one of these days).

James, Thanks for the comments. I will contact USOF and get the updated
info. We have some parents (members of a local home teaching group) that
are interested in the program. If I can work it right, they can run the
program thru our club and with our assistance. Sounds like another service
that might be offered to the Orienteering public. Jim <H:) "Orienteers do
it better on a good map."
