Jag tycker att arrangvrerna ska ha all heder av ett mycket
trevligt arrangemang. Dessutom tycker jag ockse att dom ska ha
en eloge fvr att de pe olika sdtt fvrvker bidra till att
utveckla sporten.
Genom att vara fvrst med att satsa pe Regnlysystemet pe en
"stortdvling" har man gjort en pionjdrinsats fvr att fe det
systemet mer allmdnt spritt. Det vore pe tiden att Regnlys gula
brickor blir negot mer dn en lyxartickel fvr olika mdsterskap.
Det skulle heller inte fvrvena mig om "tiomilamodellen" med
automatiska strdcktider vid sista kontrollen blir standard
pe kavlar i framtiden.
Ddremot tycker jag att man borde vara lite fvrsiktigare med
att bygga upp "stora datorndt" pe TC. Enkla system med manuella
inslag i sekretariatet dr inte se sexiga, men dom har en
viktig egenskap. Dom dr ldttare att testa i fvrvdg.

bdttre lycka med tekniken ndsta er.

Orienteering Screen Saver
=========================
This is the readme.txt accompanying version 1.0 of Osaver, a screen saver for
Microsoft Windows.
Introduction
------------
Here is my first outing into software production. As an exercise in
programming, I've put together this novelty screen saver which will amuse
orienteers, and bemuse everyone else.
It is most definitely a 1.0 version. It is at present very simple, although
I'm hoping that it is robust enough to survive the rigours of the outside
world. I have lots of ideas about how the software could develop (subject to
my abilities), and I expect you will too. If you let me know what I could do
with it (have female runners for a start!), then I might have a go. The more
ideas the better.
Installing
----------
Osaver needs three files to run:
osaver10.scr - to reside in your windows directory
osaver.ini - to reside in your windows directory
vbrun300.dll - to reside in your windows\system directory
The first file is about 40k or so...
The second is about 40 bytes...
..however, vbrun300.dll is 400k!
Vbrun300.dll is the file that a program written in humble Visual Basic (as
this is) needs to run. As it is so big, I haven't included it in the zipped
file. Before you panic, though, have a look in your windows\system directory;
you may well already have it. I'm afraid I don't have room for this file, but
there is a self-extracting .exe version of the file at
ftp.apexsc.com/pub/cgvb/misc/VBRUN300.exe - just make sure it ends up in the
right directory.
The file you retrieve is a zip file that can be un-compressed easily using a
program such as Winzip. It includes both of the osaver files. Put them in the
windows directory.
Getting it going...
-------------------
The first thing to do once the files are in the right place is to open the
'desktop' icon in Control Panel. 'Orienteering' should now be on the list of
screen savers. Select it, and choose 'setup'.
A panel will appear! Click on any of the four orienteering flags to get a
set of options for the saver (tree density, speed of runner, etc etc), and
'ok' to close. The 'info' button will tell you about the program - more on
that later...
Once setup, you should be able to test the saver. If all has gone well,
trees will start growing on your screen, flags will appear, and then a
lonesome runner will run through the forest eternally (sounds familiar??).
A Plea
------
This software was fun to write, and probably extremely educational. I
wouldn't advise any hardened VB experts to look too closely at the code,
though!
However, as well as the ocassional foray into programming, I also do a bit
of orienteering myself. If you find that you use this software at all, or even
if you like it (and certainly if it doesn't crash your system), then I would
like to introduce you to the ground-breaking concept of 'donation-ware'. The
Great Britain Squad has helped me enormously in my orienteering exploits, so
if you felt like making a contribution (preferably in pounds stirling -
however small) to the squad then it would be most appreciated by myself and
the other athletes it supports. The squad address is to be found on the 'info'
section of the 'setup' panel. You will also be informed of any major
developments of the software.

Further to recent discussion about long lists etc. on the O-net: leading
results from key World Cup races, elite classes at national championships
etc., yes please, but do we really have to plough through reams of start
lists and in depth results? I have the results of every junior (sorry, no
vets or seniors!) at the British Championships last weekend: c.300 names. I
would surely deserve to be flamed if I posted the lot on the O-net.

Here's my two cents to add to Richard Guttormson's and John Miller's replies:
I saw bubbles in my first Silva compass when I went camping at Grandfather
Mountain in North Carolina (USA). The elevation was about 5000' (1500m).
When I returned home (700', 225m), the bubbles disappeared. I used the
compass for years after that without any problems. About 4 years later, a
small bubble formed but did not interfere with the needle. In fact, it
helped me level the compass. :-) It took another 4-6 years before the
bubble became big enough to make the compass unusable. [I gave it to my
pre-school son so that he could have one to call his own.]
I have bought three Silva compasses since then. Two were used at altitudes
of 9000' (2750m) without bubbles forming. The third met an untimely end
(see below).
