On the contrary. I for one think it is fascinating viewing. The tendency
for contributors to take positions rather than examining the situation
on its merits -- throwing in unsubstantiated claims -- thinly disguising
an opinion as representing the majority.
Bit like an OF meeting without having to attend.

I have seen now different maps printed on the Epson Stylus Color with
720 DPI special paper. The quality is excellent and there is almost no
difference compared to offset printed map. So the quality problem is
solved. However the 720 DPI paper is very expensive. I addition I don't
know how this paper behaves in a competition (is the map damaged when
the paper is folded?). This has to be investigated.
Another technique to be carefully looked at is digital printing. I am
aware of tests being done in Sweden, Finland and Switzerland. These
tests are mainly done on Indigo and Agfa Chromapress machines. The
quality regarding resolution is excellent. But the maps I have seen so
far have rather fade colors. That seems to be the main problem. I also
don't have any results how the paper behaves in competitions. Prices
seem to be good for low volume printing (<1000). There are surely
digital printing shops in South Afrika, otherwise you may ask Indigo
directly.

I have two very basic questions ?
1) This might sound like a stupid question but one that I must ask, I'm
planning
to attend an O race in Austrailia in Sept 97, Do I have to purchase a
compass
from that region due to the balance of the neddle or will my current
compass
that I purchased in the northeastern USA be good enough ?
2) Does anyone know of any O races in New York taking place this fall?

In a message dated 96-09-25 13:59:49 EDT, you write:

meet held on the map several years ago. >>
You didn't have to worry about that this time around, the "over the head"
blackberries pretty much killed off the ferns (see previous posting about
gypsy moth damage). As the SON's people were told in '93 "late March and
April are the only GOOD times to put on a meet here". This still holds
true.

I am a leader with Girl Guides of Canada and I'm trying to find a

without a compass on a cloudy day. If we can see the sun through
the clouds then we're OK - what about on a heavily overcast day?
Thanks for your help

Subject: Control circles in OCAD
Message-Id: <3249A1A2.F54B.0002@CHCH.NIWA.CRI.NZ>
I'm planning a relays event in which we will use laser-printed OCAD maps
with courses drawn in OCAD. For some courses there will be as many as 9
different map combinations (1AX,1AY,1AZ,1BX,......).
One way of avoiding screw-ups would be to put all the controls on a master
map, then for each course combination only turn on the controls relevant
for that course. This would ensure that between maps the controls are on
identical features. If all the controls were the default control circle in
OCAD, this would be simple because you can just reduce the line width to
zero and the control disappears. But in our case, we're going to have to
cut some of the circles to avoid obscuring adjacent features. Then we use
the circle tool and scissors. But now we cannot reduce the line width to
zero, or if we do the line still appears.
Has anyone faced and solved this problem??
Perhaps I could define a new colour and put it at the bottom of the colour
list.....
Is there a better way?

To clear up a little confusion regarding next year's rogaine ...
Event: Maxi-Moose Rogaine
Date: May 17-18, 1997
Location: Cobequid Mountains of Colchester County, Nova Scotia
(near village of Wentworth)
Classes: junior, senior, masters, mixed; 6 hour and 24 hour
There is a 50 team limit, "first-come, first-served" basis. Now that
the cat is out of the bag, I'd better get my application in.
This is the only rogaine planned for next spring in Nova Scotia and is
the event so enthusiastically advertised by Greg Nix (the original
poster). He apparantly mixed up the dates.

I have been toying with the idea for a while of trying to set up a uk only

uk.sport.orienteering !!
I think I know how to go about this and the right people to lobby in the
uk net community.
The first step is to see if there is any support - I think to stand a chance
we need several tens of supporters.
Before taking this further, is there any out there?

I had a miserable experience on the Land of Vikings map with deadfalls
that couldn't be seen because of hip high ferns during the first A-
meet held on the map several years ago. Decided to give the place
a pass except possibly for December-March when the vegetation may
have died down enough for basic safety.

Over here in Indiana and Ohio we have a great lot of seasonal variation.
Some of the places that are pretty nasty now will be much more open and
fast once the grassy stuff is dead.
The places that the US Champs are in should be fairly good (my estimate is
average speed of 75-80% of a "completely open" forest) in late October.
