A very good idea. If you can figure out the (obviously different!)
datums used by the two maps, this will indeed give an exact answer.

However, if you're actually going to ski for several days (240 km)
across a frozen bay, I would definitely suggest that you buy, beg or
borrow that GPS for the time of the crossing.

This way you can use it just like Bxrge Oustland used GPS last year when
making the first ever solo crossing of Antarctica, from Berkner Island
via the South Pole to McMurdo Sound, a distance of about 3000 (!) km.

I am just reading the book he wrote (which I heartily reccommend! (sp?))
for my kids, one chapter each evening!

Bxrge used a compass during the daytime, but mostly he just checked the
angle that the shadow of his poles crossing his skis made, and verified
this with the current local time.

He managed to keep a very straight line doing this, even when the wind
was good so he could parasail for some hours.

Terje

PS. Since this will probably interest the xc skiers as well, I have
included rec.skiing.nordic as well.

Below is a list of multi day events around the world in 1998, as
requested a few days ago by Olive Kearney. This is the basis of the
list to be published in CompassSport later this month. If any
organiser finds the details of his/her event wrong or missing please
let me know asap. It has been compiled from quite a lot of different
sources including replies to internet postings over the last few
days. It is certainly more complete than the IOF electronic calendar
list.

By posting the list I am putting it in the public domain.
Reproduction is OK with acknoweldgement to CompassSport.

Also feedback on whether it should have been posted here ie is it
useful or just an annoying use of bandwidth.

Whichever, have good orienteering vacations in 1998.

I'd take the real easy way out. Note the latitude & longitude of both
points then go visit a friend/outdoor store who has a GPS and load the
points in. Find the bearing.

Thanks for the tips!

The reason why I use such a map to get a single bearing is simple: We're
going to ski on a frozen lake over a distance of 35 miles. Next year, we
plan to cross the Jame Bay (Quibec) over 150 miles. This is why we can
take only one bearing (the two point being on the shores, it is
impossible two take a bearing between a point on one shore and the
middle of the lake!).

Thank you!

Christ.

A little side issue in drawing vegetation.

On my first map there were several over printing problems. The
map was printed from six colour separation eps files. Black,
blue, green, yellow, brown, and gray. to generate printing plates
 by photographic methods.

The problems where that these separations don't have wholes cut
in them where higher level colours over lap. ie. 50% brown for
road in fills was printed over blues, greens and yellows. This
looks a bit gastly bit its still fine to read and follow.

Unfortunately the gray (bare rock) was printed as a black screen
the gray and the black being combined as a negitive. the result
was that the gray (black screen) over printed the black. Thus
many of my cliffs thinned or disappeared into bare rock.

The morale of the story. Don't use a separate gray separation
unless you are printing a separate gray separation.

The correct address for the shareware spelling program - Spellwrite is
http://www.nerdsunlimited.com
I posted the address last week but had left out the www part of the
address.

The shareware spell checker program has been acclaimed to being capable of
spell checking Ocad files. According to Hans S. the program will only work
with Ocad6.

With line text you must activate the spell checker for that line of text
before pressing the enter key.

I found it cumbersome and not very efficient to use with formatted text.

I would appreciate the secrets for getting this program to work efficiently
if someone has been more successful.

The program does work well with programs that don't have spell checkers
like wordpad, spread sheets, e-mail
programs, etc. For the purpose of checking e-mail messages it is well worth
having available.

The program loads when you start up Windows and can be activated by
pressing the F9 key.

It has a dictionaries for both the US and the UK. The are separate editions
for Win3.1x and Win 95. Available at:
