     I suggest you start with the U.S. Orienteering Assoc. web page:
http://www.us.orienteering.org
Go to "clubs" and you'll get a map and list of US Orienteering Clubs, scroll
down to Northwest region and you'll find Cascade Orienteering Club.
     There are several orienteering clubs active in and around Seattle, and the
best advice is to look up their schedules and show up at one of their local
events... there will always be instruction for beginners and someone who can
answer questions.
     There are several present and former U. Washington students and faculty
involved in orienteering... if you can't find good e-mail addresses on the
Cascade or Sammamish club web sites, e-mail me and I'll get you some local
e-mail addresses and phone numbers.  And, let me know if you have any further
questions...

Newbies should start out at the O-NET UFAQ located at
http://www.megsinet.net/~gdt/o_net_faq.htm or you can get to it from
http://www.megsinet.net/~gdt/ this page also has links to most US clubs
sorted by state.  There are several in your area.
