Hudson Valley Orienteering has announced that the entries are coming in, and the field is filling fast, for the fifth annual Hudson Highlander, to be held on Sunday, October 10th. The Hudson Highlander has quickly established a reputation as North America's premier ultra-distance orienteering race. Once again this year, a strong international field is taking shape, with each entrant keen on preventing two-time defending champion Eric Cyr of Canada from making it three straight. Interested orienteers planning on entering are urged to do so soon. The field is limited in size, and last year's starters are guaranteed a place in the field if they postmark their registration by September 25th. This year's Highlander will have all the features - commemorative gifts to finishers, post race barbecue, and the King and Queen of the Mountain and of the Sprint competitions - that keeps most orienteers who have raced in it coming back year after year. Thanks to technology, a couple of new wrinkles have been added this year. Interested orienteers can contact the meet director to ask a question about the meet or their entry at HH-5@att.net, an address dedicated solely to this year's meet. And, for those with internet access, checking out the latest information about the meet is easy to do by going to the HVO web site at http://www.geocities.com/Yosemite/8761 and clicking on the link for the Hudson Highlander page. Thanks to the interest in the race and the incredible job the members and friends of HVO have done in staffing the Highlander every year, the maximum field size for this year's field has been increased to 100. Between the high number returnees that are anticipated (and are guaranteed a spot in the field if their entry is postmarked by September 25th), newcomers we already know about (West Point hopes to send a much larger contingent this year, for example...are you listening Annapolis? the Citadel?), and the entries that have already been received, it is expected that the 1999 field will fill up in advance of race day. So, if you have been thinking about entering, don't delay. All the entry information you need follows below. If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to contact Melissa Dominguez, the 1999 Hudson Highlander Meet Director. HUDSON HIGHLANDER V Sunday, October 10, 1999...somewhere in the Hudson Valley...directions to the assembly area will be revealed to entrants in the pre-race met announcement which will be sent, by electronic or postal mail, on Monday, October 4, 1999. Founder/Course Setter: Paul Bennett Meet Director: Melissa Dominguez Vetter: Joe Mokszycki The Hudson Highlander is 'America's premier ultra distance orienteering race'. It features three orienteering segments and a 'short' trail run, all totaling the 'metric marathon' distance of 26.3 kilometers. The organizers reserve the right to limit the field to 100 entrants. Starters in 1998's Hudson Highlander IV, who postmark their entries by Saturday, September 25th, are guaranteed a place in this year's field. Entry fees: For starters in the 1998 race, its $20 if postmarked on or before September 25th; $24 if postmarked after that. For all other entrants, its $24 if postmarked on or before September 25th; $30 if postmarked after that. The Hudson Highlander features...a commemorative gift to all orienteers who finish in 8 hours or less. Superb. Absolutely brilliant system for analysing races. Thanks very much for allowing me to analyse my results in the Scottish 6 day - I hope more events go on your site in the future. David
